Halloween is just a week away, and while I’m not doing a storytime on Halloween, tonite I will most definitely be reading some Halloween tricks and treats…..

Pumpkin Trouble by Jan Thomas.  Easy text, super fun illustrations….this will be a hit.

Not Very Scary by Carol Brendler  and illustrated by Greg Pizzoli.  Melly isn’t afraid of much but when she is walking to a party, she feels she is being followed.  First by 1 black cat, then 2 skittish skeletons.  A fun Halloween counting book.

Pete the Cat:  Five Little Pumpkins by James Dean.  Simply adorable.  Rhyming text and great Pete the Cat illustrations…I am so excited to read this one tonite!

Peep and Egg:  I’m Not Trick-or-Treating by Laura Gehl  and illustrated by Joyce Wan.  It’s Halloween and Peep wants to trick-or-treat but Egg does not. Peep tries everything to get Egg to go. Will Egg finally agree or will Peep have to go all alone???

Ghost in the House by Ammi-Joan Paquette and illustrated by Adam Record is a super fun Halloween story that sneakily adds some counting to the text.  This one is another that I will try and squeeze into storytime!

Halloween is just around the corner….

Published August 25, 2016 by neverwearmatchingsox

I read Halloween books all year long.  Since school has started (or is about to) that means that the holidays are right around the corner.  Go ahead and curse me but you know it’s true!!  So, to get ready for my favorite holiday of all time, here are some picture books that are on my shelf waiting for that storytime in October:

There Was an Old Mummy Who Swallowed a Spider by Jennifer Ward and illustrated by Steve Gray

Such a fun twist on the classic “There Was An Old Lady” books.  Great illustrations and fun rhyming text.

Quite Calling Me a Monster by Jory John  and illustrated by Bob Shea

A monster who doesn’t think he is a monster tries to get everyone to stop calling him a monster.  Fun illustrations.  I think kids will be able to contribute to this story quite nicely.

Monster Trucks by Anika Denise and illustrated by Nate Wragg

Monster trucks moan, grumble and groan….but who will win the race on the spooky speedway??? Fun story with great illustrations.

Frankenstein A Monstrous Parody

Published September 23, 2013 by neverwearmatchingsox

Frankenstein    I had really high hopes for this book as I love Halloween and I love rhyming books. This book started out strong but just a few pages in the rhymes lost the ability to hold my attention. I don’t think this would work out as a read aloud story for me. I do however love the illustrations as they remind me of books from the 70s.

Scaredy Squirrel Prepares for Halloween

Published September 11, 2013 by neverwearmatchingsox

scaredy squirrel halloween    This was the first Scaredy Squirrel book I read, thanks to Netgalley.  I love all the preparation that Scaredy does for any adventure he goes on (deciding what candy transportation device is needed) and the tips he gives the reader (5 reasons why the apple is a particularly scary fruit).  I think the kids at my school will get a  kick out of Scaredy and I think it would be fun to create some more storylines from him.
